It’s named after one of the most important kings of Aragon who was responsible for consolidating and expanding the Kingdom of Aragon. Alfonso I was the conqueror of Saragossa and legend has it that he even entered Mediterranean waters on horseback at the beaches of Motril (Granada) after raiding the heart of Islamic Andalusia through the territories of Teruel and Levante.
