Following in Roman footsteps at the Parador de Mérida
12 de November 2013

Each summer for over 60 years now Mérida and Almagro have become must-visit destinations for anyone interested in a getaway that offers a combination of relaxation, gastronomy, tourism and culture!

Attending a performance at the Roman theater in the former Emérita Augusta during the months of July and August is an experience everyone should enjoy at least once in their life. Each year, these two months bring thousands of people to the city for the Classical Theater performances. This year there is still time to experience what it feels like to take in a performance while seated under the stars.

When you decide to plan a getaway to Mérida, you will find just how much there is to discover. Stay at the Parador de Mérida and sign up for one of the guided tours that depart from the 18th-century convent. The tour includes key spots in the history of this ancient Roman settlement: the Arch of Trajan, Temple of Diana, Forum Portico, theater and amphitheater, as well as the crypt of St. Eulalia. Just a couple of hours with a guide will allow you to explore every aspect of Mérida.

The tour finishes up where it began, at the Parador, which offers a cocktail with spiced wine and cool beer, accompanied by cheese plates and freshly made croquettes. Enjoy these delightful treats in the fabulous interior cloister. A tip: look closely at the columns and selection of inscriptions that have been preserved. Amazing!

After you've had a bite to eat, we recommend a refreshing dip in the delightful swimming pool. Stretch out on one of the comfortable loungers to dry and whet your appetitie for the delicacies served in the restaurant. The many hearty dishes and variety of starters to share will delight the palates of all those seeking a getaway to a special gastro destination.
