Paradores creates "Tapas only" tasting menus for #WorldTapasDay
26 de September 2014

This Monday, 29 September 2014 marks the third annual World Tapas Day - a global celebration of Spain's world-famous snacks and appetizers created in 2012 by gastro-tourism association Tasting Spain. As one of the main sponsors of this key day in the culinary calendar, Spain's state-owned landmark hotel group Paradores  is marking the occasion by serving special 'tapas only' tasting menus at each of its 94 boutique hotels throughout mainland Spain and the Canary Islands.

Few things are more recognisably, quintessentially Spanish than tapas. Literally meaning 'covers' or 'lids', the original tapas are said to have been slices of bread or meat used by Andalusians to cover their glasses and prevent fruit flies getting to their sweet sherry. Over the centuries, these tapas - also known in Northern Spain as pinchos, or pintxos in Basque - have evolved into a highly sophisticated and distinct cuisine.

Exemplifying Spanish culture, and embracing the avant garde whilst respecting the country's history and traditions, the Paradores hotels are the perfect places to enjoy some of the finest tapas Spain has to offer.

This World Tapas Day, diners at Spain's Paradors can choose from two 'tapas only' tasting menus - one priced at €20 per person and another at €30 per person. Each comprises a mouth-watering selection of eight gourmet tapas created using the finest local ingredients and traditional recipes from that particular Parador's location. Typical examples include classics such as Ensaladilla rusa; Escalibada; Iberian pork with migas; and Tortilla de Patatas.

Constant reinvention and collaboration amongst Paradores chefs is all part of the group's commitment to remaining at the forefront of contemporary Spanish gastronomy. Other inventive twists on traditional Spanish cuisine by the Paradores' culinary team include a special El Greco Menu, designed in conjunction with some of Spain's Michelin-starred chefs to recreate recipes from El Greco's time living in Toledo; a special Pilgrim's Menu served at Paradores along the Way of St James pilgrimage route; and regular gastronomic wine pairing dinners.
