The first Parador outside Spain
Parador Casa da Ínsua

Casa da Ínsua is located in Penalva do Castelo, a small Portuguese village only 25 kilometres from Visau and 70 kilometres from the Spanish border. This Baroque-style building was built in the second half of the 18th century, restored in 2009, and converted into a Parador in 2015, becoming the first hotel of the Parador Network to be located outside Spain.

The complex was built by Luis de Alburquerque de Mello Pereira y Cáceres, Hidalgo of the Spanish Royal House, and later Governor and Captain General of the State of Mato Grosso, Brazil. It retains the two original towers that he built, a huge courtyard and the imposing façade with large windows. You'll love strolling through its gardens, where you'll find botanical species as rare as they are beautiful.

The overall interior decor with works by renowned artists is a reminder of its past, such as the fountain in the courtyard by the Italian master Nicola Bibaglia, the hand-painted wallpaper by Gué, and the artillery pieces from the times of Queen Maria Cristina.

The Parador also houses a farm that produces cheese and marmalade, an activity that you can join in, along with a tasting session of Dão wines. Its two outdoor swimming pools, the reading and games room, the gym and the chapel, are other spaces that will make you wish that you could stop time to enjoy this destination all the more.

  • What to do?
What to do in Parador Casa da Ínsua

Just 25 kilometres from the Parador Casa da Ínsua is the city of Viseu, a charming town with a 16th century Cathedral. The city walls and the old city gate, the Archbishop's Palace, the Roman defensive construction of Cava de Viriatom, and the 18th century Church of Misericordia are all worth visiting.

But you don't have to go that far to enjoy the architectural and scenic beauty of the surroundings. The Parador Casa da Ínsua also houses a museum that retraces the life and history of the founders of Casa da Ínsua, gives us an insight into the organisation of the region of Brazil at the time, and there’s a chance to visit an old ice factory.

The Parador also has a winery that produces its own wines with the Casa da Ínsua and the Dão Demarcated Region centenary designations. We can also sample the cheeses produced in the Serra da Estela factory, within the Casa da Ínsua Estate. These activities are organised by the Parador itself, all you need to do is enquire.

In addition to the obvious relevance of its architecture and its legacy, the Parador Casa da Ínsua is also famous for its magnificent eighteenth-century gardens, remarkable both for their size and for the originality and variety of the species they hold.

The front garden is in the French style, with a geometric layout that leads to the English garden and the garden of aromas, where you can find, among others, a very rare lotus flower and a monumental magnolia from 1842.
