Parador de Alcañiz

The Parador de Alcañiz is sitatued in one of the most complex architectural ensembles of Aragon. The huge building, half castle and half convent, will impress you with its imposing outline that dominates the entire area.

Alcañiz is the ideal place to forget about routines and get away: breakfast at the Romanesque cloisters, a glass of wine in the enclosed patio of the old palace or a walk through its tranquil gardens. The wide interior spaces and careful décor of the building augment the exterior light and make the rooms warm and welcoming without losing their historical touch.

Built on the summit of the Cerro Pui Pinos, this 12th-13th c. castle-convent still conserves its keep, the belltower-sacristy and the 17th c. Palacio de los Comendadores.

The 14th c. Gothic frescos deserve a special mention. They cover the walls and are set, along with the beautiful Plateresque sepulchre and Baroque façade, in a space of smooth red, ochre and green tones that will take you to another age as you gaze at the marvellous landscape of the Aragonese Maestrazgo’s mountain range.

    Explore the surroundings in Alcañiz

Historical capital of the Bajo Aragon region, Alcañiz is one of the most beautiful cities in the province. The Parador sits on the summit of the Cerro Pui-Pinos, at the foot of which lies a city of arcaded plazas and narrow streets full of balconies that will enchant you as soon as you see it. The best way to discover Alcañiz is to lose yourself in its old quarter, where you can see the Lonja Gótica and the Fountain of the 72 Spouts. Would you like to know more about its secrets? Join one of the tours that explore the underground world of the city and immerse yourself in the passageways, galleries and medieval cold room.

Alcañiz is much more than a city. If you like archaeology, you’ll be amazed by the more than 70 examples of cave art in Teruel. If you prefer sports, take a bike and discover the Green Trail of the Val de Zafán, a route along old railway lines that have been adapted for cycle-tourism and horse riding. Another unmissable attraction is the MotorLand circuit, where you can try autocrossing, karting or motocrossing, and enjoy competitions such as the Aragon Moto GP Grand Prix.

Another attractive plan? Take your bike and cycle for less than an hour to reach the Val de Zafán Greenway. There, lose yourself along the old railway tracks, now adapted for biking or horse riding. And if you’re interested in history, the province of Teruel has more than 70 sites of Levantine Rock Art.

Alcañiz is also one of the nine villages on the Ruta del Tambor y del Bombo trail, a major cultural and tourist route of several that are available in the area. You can also take the Maestrazgo Route, the Guadalope Route, or the Matarraña Route.
