In the heart of the most famous town in Cantabria
Parador de Santillana Gil Blas

A magnificent 17th c. noble town house stands in the heart of Santillana del Mar, a town declared as a National Monument. This building is now the Parador de Santillana Gil Blas, which takes its name from the famous literary rogue created by Alain-René Lesage in 1715.

Behind an attractive stone façade, a hospitable and elegant interior awaits you, with wooden floors and comfortable rooms, some of which have a fireplace. All this, combined with the regional décor, will take you back to an earlier, more peaceful age, ideal for enjoying a pleasant evening accompanied by the Parador’s excellent cuisine.

Located at the lower end of a plaza, next to the Torre del Merino and opposite the town hall, the Parador de Santillana Gil Blas occupies what was the old Casa Barreda-Bracho, a 17th c. Baroque town house built in the style of the homes of the local nobility of the period.

Characterised by the use of stone masonry in the façade, with notable features such as the coat of arms of the Barreda-Bracho family and four cast iron balconies, the building was converted into a Parador in 1946, to become one of the first establishments in the Paradores Network.

    Explore the surroundings in Santillana

Santillana del Mar, “the most beautiful village in Spain” according to the French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre, is a welcoming and special place since you can only visit the town on foot. Car free, this beautiful little town offers some very special routes, where you’ll fall in love with the beautiful buildings such as the Casa del Águila and la Parra, the statue of the Man of Altamira and the old town hall right in front of the Parador.

If Santillana is famous for one thing, it’s for the prehistoric paintings of the Caves of Altamira, the so called Sistine Chapel of Cave Art. Visits are now restricted to prevent further deterioration, but you can go to and see an exact replica at the National Museum and Interpretation Centre of Altamira. What’s more, just a few kilometres away you’ll find beautiful villages such as San Vicente de la Barquera and Comillas, where you can see El Capricho by Gaudí. If nature is what you prefer, you can relax at the nearby beaches of Urbiaco, Cobreces and Suances, or visit the spectacular natural monuments of the Cave of El Soplao or the sequoia forest of Monte Cabezón.

At the Barreda-Bracho mansion, which is now the Parador de Santillana Gil Blas, you can begin a walking tour of the historic quarter and discover its unique buildings, such as the Casa del Águila and the Casa de la Plaza, or the old town hall building.

Just 2 kilometres from the village is the zoo, and just over 15 kilometres away is beautiful village of Comillas, which is protected by the Cantabrian Sea. Nature has also been kind to Santillana del Mar, and near its historic centre are the Santa Justa and Ubiarco beaches. Other nearby destinations, which also have beaches, include Cobreces, Suances and San Vicente de la Barquera.
