Route of the Galician Wine

Route

  • Starting Parador. Sunday. (One night stay) (Parador de Puebla de Sanabria)

Puebla de Sanabria is attractive because of its natural surroundings, the Natural Park of Lago de Sanabria being the star. It is the largest lake of Spain. Among the monuments to visit, we may include the impressive castle (XV century), built by the Conde de Benavente, the church of Santa María del Azogue (XII century), started in the Romanic style, but with important transformations during the XVI, XVII and XVIII centuries), the ¿Ermita de San Cayetano¿ (baroque, XVII century) and the City Hall (XVI century). All together have awarded the town the title of Historic-Artistic Complex.

  • Monday (One night stay) (Parador de Verín)

This trip is guided by the wine. The Official Denomination Monterrei is awarded to the wines of this region, irrigated by the Támega river and its tributaries. Its extension is about 3.000 Ha. The monks in the medieval centuries brought the wine with them. Vineyards were built around every monastery. Grapes in this area have a wide variety. White grapes varieties are verdello, doña blanca, monstruosa and treixadura or verdello louro. Red grapes are mencia and bastardo. Closet o the Parador, the guest will find the Gargalo cellar, whose owner is the designer Roberto Verino.

  • Tuesday (One night stay) (Parador de Monforte de Lemos)

Starting at Verín, we direct our steps to the ¿Rivera Sacra¿. In 1993, the Official Denomination Viños da Terra was created, but it was not until 1996 that it really came into life. Close to this area is also the area of the D.O. Valdeorras, created back in 1945. The wine tradition of this part of Galicia goes back to Roman times. Currently, more than 40 cellars exist. Varieties of grapes used include Godello, Dña. Blanca, Palomino Fino, Moscatel de Bago Miudo (White) and Mencia, Merenzao, Negreda, Grao Negro, Garnacha, Tintorera, Arbarello, Tempranillo, Tintilla (red). More information under www.ribeirasacra.org and www.dovaldeorras.com

  • Wednesday (One night stay) (Parador de Santo Estevo)

 We are staying now at the heart of the ¿Ribera Sacra¿. The Consejo Regulador de Ribeira Sacra has three main tasks: to guarantee the origin of the product, to assure the quality of the wine and to promote the wines produced in the region. Wines produced in this region have to comply with the following requirements: white wine produced exclusively from albariño or godello grapes, and red wines produces only from Mencía grapes. More information under www.ribeirasacra.org

  • Thursday (One night stay) (Parador de Tui)

In March 1988, the D.O. Rías Baixas was created. Wines produced under this D.O. use exclusively Albariño, Loureira blanca or Marqués Treixadura and Caiño grapes for White wines, and Caiño tinto, Espadeiro, Loureira tinta and Sousón grapes for red wines. The subzone ¿O Rosal¿ is located on the right end of the Miño river mouth. From A Guarda, in front of the sea, you may see the estuary of the river Miño. On the top of the Santa Tecla mountain (viewpoint), you may visit the most important roman ruin of a ¿castro¿ in Galicia (IV century b. Cr.) The whole mountain is covered with petro glyphs and cave paintings. On the top of the mountain, you may visit the Museo Arqueológico. Close to O Rosal, there is an interesting group of water mills. Within the village limits, more than 50 ¿cruceiros¿ may be visited (XVI ¿ XVIII centuries). More info under www.doriasbaixas.com

  • Friday and Saturday (Two nights stay) (Parador de Cambados)

This is the best way to finish this journey. The subzone of Val de Salnés, with its centre in Cambados, is the largest of the five subzones of this D.O. The region is characterized by the valley of the Umia river. This is a privileged area for the wine lover, with many sites to visit. White wines of this area are dry, with strong aromas, intensively fruited. The Albariño-type wines are yellowish, with golden and green sparkles. The "Rosal" and "Condado do Tea"-type wines are very personal, because they are produced, respectively, with "Loureira" and "Treixadura" grapes. The wines are intense in their aroma, slightly acid, full in flavor and attractive.
