11 de September 2014

Did you know that Spain has several museums devoted to exploring the world of cheese? It's true, and starting this year, the La Mancha town of Manzanares has one of its own. This is the perfect place to learn all about the history and qualities of a product with strong ties to this area. For generations, it has been a staple of the local diet and an economic driving force for the region.

The Manzanares Museum of Cheese is located in the town center, occupying a 17th-century ancestral home. The displays offer a tour of the history of cheese and it close connection to local life. At the museum, you will discover how important the seasonal migration of Merino sheep has been to Manzanares, as well as how the cheese-making process has evolved to create an authentic product with excellent quality and exquisite flavor.

You will learn how to identify Manchego cheese by the basket weave pattern on the rind and flat sides, to determine how long it has aged based on the color and to recognize the quality label which guarantees that the cheese you are buying is a true cheese from this Designation of Origin.
