The charm of Avilés is due to its past. It is a well-known place because of being an old coast village in the pure heart of the maritime region of Asturias. There had been some Prehistoric remains, but it seems that until Roman times there was not a proper society established in Avilés.

The historical centre of Avilés has been named Historic-Artistic-Monumental Site because of its medieval beauty and because of keeping so many impressive architectonic remains, both religious and civil ones. It is actually one of the best preserved ones in the north of Spain.

You will feel that History just by walking through its stone streets and walls. There are so many spots that need to be visited if you go to Avilés:

  • Main Square and City Hall of Avilés. Both still keep the style of the historic centre of Avilés but they have been adapted to the modernity that has invaded the city. It used to be known as "El Parche" and it was built back in the XVII century.
  • Sabugo Church, now known as Santo Tomás de Canterbury church. It started to be built around the XIII century but there are some doubts about it. It is a beautiful religious temple.
  • The Palace of Valdecarzana, also known as Baragañas' House. It is a gothic palace from the XIV and XV centuries and one of the oldest civil building in the city.
  • The Palace of Camposagrado, a Baroque styled palace from the XVII century, used in the past as part of the defensive structures.
  • Galiana and Rivero Streets, so beautiful and nice to walk along them and its big doors and wide floors.
  • Theatre-Palace Valdés, built in the XX century and one of the most emblematic cultural and historic buildings of the city. It is still on work nowadays.
  • Ferrera Park. It is one of the biggest parks of the region with around 80.000m2. It is full of nature, green trees and different types of flowers. It also has a pond located at one of the entries with ducks and swans swimming in it.

You can also walk along the side of the Ría of Avilés, a tidal river that divides the city into two: the Historic centre and the industrial area of Avilés. After a walk along it, you will meet the Faro de la Ría, a lighthouse tower from the XIX century. It is located in a perfect spot where to enjoy the nicest views of the coast and the sea. It is actually settled in an area that is protected against pollution and industry, so that people can delight in the beauty of this vantage point.

The city of Avilés is, nowadays, such a Cosmopolitan and modern city immersed in a unique medieval atmosphere. Everything is clean and carefully kept and it is so entertaining to walk along its pedestrians walkways full of charm.

Remember our Parador de Gijón is just 30 kilometres away from the beautiful city of Avilés. It would be such a perfect trip to visit this city while spending a nice time at our Parador de Gijón placed in the old mill of Isabel la Católica Park.
