Do you know what marshes are? They are areas of low-lying land usually wet because of being flooded by the water of lakes or streams. They are often surrounded by herbaceous plants and rushes creating a unique natural landscape. The marshes we are going to talk about are the Marismas de Isla Cristina, located so close to our Paador de Ayamonte in the province of Huelva.
Parador de Ayamonte
Around 11 kilometres away from the Parador de Ayamonte, we find the Marismas de Isla Cristina, located in the Atlantic coast of Andalusia, right in the mouth of the Carreras River. It covers 2145 hectares of wet areas in a swampy low territory, and it is an interesting spot if you are spending your holidays in the south of Spain.
The most interesting spots of the Marismas de Isla Cristina are the salty regions around. They are, in fact, the best preserved areas. They share space with the protected fauna of the region, such as otters, storks and some aquatic birds and endemic species. Regarding to flora, the variety is not that much. Some pines and other plants that can be adapted to these salty regions.
Parador de Ayamonte
In some marshes, you can distinguish the areas that have been under human activity so as to transform them and use them to obtain resources. This is the case of some areas in the Marismas de Isla Cristina that have been used to develop aquaculture activities, ponds and even pools.
To visit this natural paradise, there are three signposted routes:
- Laguna del Prado. It takes less than 1.2 kilometres and you can access it from the urban nucleus of La Redondela
- Salinas del Duque. It is the longest one. It will take you a bit more than 7 kilometres and you can enjoy the bird observatory that is located on the way.
- Molino mareal de Pozo del Camino. Less tan 1 kilometre long.
In order for visitors to learn more about the region, there is the Eco museum of Las Marismas de Isla Cristina. There is also an Interpretation Centre: human beings and marshes. It is placed in an old mill from the XVIII century and visitors can learn about the human activity taking place on the marshes as well as the past history of them.
Walking around the Marismas de Isla Cristina is an opportunity to meet a different natural landscape full of charm. It means being immersed in nature as well as in a contrast of colours, sounds and natural processes.
Parador de Ayamonte
You can access the marshes by boat from the Carreras River, but you can also walk there from the Parador de Ayamonte.
