The Parador de Guadalupe is less than 3 hours from Madrid by car and 1 1/2 hours from the city of Cáceres. This enchanting hotel is located in the former Palace of the Marquis de la Romana (originally San Juan Bautista Hospital in the 15th century and Infantes School in the 16th century). It is the perfect place for outdoor activities (hiking, horseback riding, 4x4 excursions, etc.) or simply enjoying a stroll through the marvelous garden (incidentally, a favorite spot of the brides and grooms who choose this Parador for their wedding celebration).

Day 1: history and art in Guadalupe
On your first day, we recommend a visit to the province's most important religious site: the Basilica-Sanctuary of Santa María de Guadalupe and Royal Monastery of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, dating from the 14th century, now listed as a World Heritage Site. This spectacular Gothic-Mudejar structure is made up of the church, auditorium and two cloisters: one Mudejar and the other Gothic. Its eight towers, magnificent altarpiece on the high altar and the artistic treasures housed inside encourage visitors to take their time, making for an even more enjoyable experience.
Did you know that the building is home to The Apotheosis of St. Jerome? One of Zurbarán's most important works, it is found in the dazzling sacristy of this monastery complex. Works by El Greco, Michelangelo are among the highlights of the Sculpture Museum.
You can visit Monday-Sunday, 9:30-1:00 and 3:30-6:30, for just 5 (hours and prices may be subject to change).
In addition to the sanctuary and monastery, Guadalupe has many other points of interest to visit. Don't miss:
- Plaza de Santa María, with its fountain and the baptismal font where the first two natives from the America were baptized
- 15th-century Women's Hospital.
- A walk along the cobbled streets of the town center: Calle Real, Calle Pasión.
- Jewish quarter.
- Humilladero Chapel, also from the 15th century.
- Artisanal Nativity scene.
After a day of sightseeing throughout the town and its key spots, we recommend an enjoyable dinner at the Parador. The house specialty is an exquisite cod supreme with spinach and potato sauce.
Day 2: birdwatching excursion
The Guadalupe area is a favorite travel destination for lovers of birdwatching. Each year, thousands of people come here to observe the huge number of species that choose this spot as their winter grounds between November and February. If you have the opportunity to visit during this period, don't miss this amazing natural spectacle.
Day 3: exploring Las Villuercas
The natural riches of this district are notable for their range of ecosystems, boasting a wide variety of flora and fauna. It is home to the Villuercas Ibores Jara Geopark, which has Appalachian-type relief. It is part of the European Geoparks Network.
