A medieval lookout over the river Júcar
Parador de Alarcón

The Parador de Alarcon is located inside a castle with more than 1,300 years of history. It looks out over the river Júcar from the uppermost point of one its gorges, the Pico de los Hidalgos, with privileged views of the area. The castle itself is also regarded as the best preserved one in the province of Cuenca.

All the interior rooms have been rebuilt to adapt them to the Parador’s needs, in a combination of modern and classical styles in which textiles give an especially medieval flavour. The walls, stone ceilings and the decoration in the rooms will take you back to the Middle Ages.

The castle of Alarcón dates back to what was probably a pre-Roman fortification that was later converted into a Moorish citadel. In 1184 it became a Christian stronghold. Most of the building is Gothic in style, except for the Renaissance keep, and is built around a small interior patio with a water cistern.

The castle is surrounded by three lines of defensive walls that link it to the other fortifications of the town of Alarcón. It still  has the old external walled courtyard, which is now home to the Parador gardens and car park. One of the most famous owners of the castle was Don Juan Manuel (1282-1348), known for his book “El Conde Lucanor”.

    Explore the surroundings in Alarcón

Alarcón is a small medieval town surrounded by the river Júcar and was declared a Site of Historic-Artistic Interest in 1981. When you wander through its charming streets, you’ll be surprised by the variety and beauty of its monuments : from palaces such as El Concejo and Castañeda, to many churches such as Santo Domingo de Silos and Santa María, whose range of styles demonstrate the importance of Alarcón right up to the Modern Age. Another unmissable attraction are Jesús Mateo’s murals in what is now the deconsecrated church of San Juan Bautista, which were declared a Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2005.

The wall that surrounds the town is still almost entirely intact, along with the gates of El Campo, El Calabozo and El Bodegón. The small isthmus also offers you the Puerta del Calabozo and the Torre de Armas of the castle, both of which date back to the 13th c. The Parador is surrounded by the river Júcar and the nearby reservoir, which is an ideal place to do water sports or bathe on its beaches. If hiking is what you prefer, the route along the Hoz de Alarcón is not to be missed.

The Parador de Alarcón is surrounded by the river Júcar and it’s a stone's throw away from the reservoir of the same name. It’s six kilometres away from Alarcón and has a large number of inland beaches, such as Playa del Árbol or Playa Olivares, ideal spots for water sports. The river Júcar is also an ideal fishing spot. If you're more of a hiking enthusiast, you can't miss out on the sights along the Hoz de Alarcón route.

If you prefer wine tourism, you can visit the wineries of Illana and Vitis Natura, which are less than an hour's drive away.
