A natural getaway in the Larrea Palace
Parador de Argómaniz

The Parador de Argómaniz is an elegant Renaissance palace that looks out over the plains of Alava and the Sierra de Gorbea. An ideal place to disconnect and relax, with reading areas, terrace and gardens.

One of the most special places is the parador’s restaurant, Aletegui, in the old palace barn. The original 18th c. coffered ceiling has been conserved, while the restaurant’s porthole windows are a characteristic feature of Basque architecture. Let yourself be enchanted by this magical place where wood in all its forms makes every room unique and homely.

The building, which dates back to 1712, occupies the Palacio de los Larrea, whose coat of arms can be seen on the façade. Its strategic location has made it a crossroads for different cultures: through here passed Romans, Christians, Moslems, Jews and even caravans from Flanders and France.

The Parador was also a Descalced Carmelite convent before being converted into a palace, and during the Peninsular War it was used as a headquarters for French troops. Legend has it that Napoleon planned the attack on Vitoria at this very place.

    Explore the surroundings in Argómaniz

The Parador de Argómaniz occupies a unique space, just 12 kilometres from Vitoria, the green and cosmopolitan capital city of the province. The best way to discover it is to wander around the old quarter, where you will be amazed by its palaces, parks and the Old Cathedral of Santa María, which inspired the writer Ken Follett for his novel The Pillars of the Earth. Bilbao, San Sebastián, Burgos and Logroño are all less than 100 kilometres away. Would you like to discover another side to Vitoria? Go to the Wetlands of Salburua, walk along the Paseo de la Senda or discover its artistic side on the urban art trail.

Álava is culture and nature. Its landscapes full of prehistoric constructions will take you to the Natural Park of Garaio, in front of the Parador, or to the reservoir of Ulibarri-Gamboa, one of the few inland beaches with a blue flag in Spain. You can also visit the traditional cheese makers of the region and the wine cellars of La Rioja Alavesa, without missing the iconic Sanctuary of Estibaliz, patron saint of Álava. More adventurous spirits can climb Mount Gorbea. The strategic location of the parador also allows visitors to visit the provincial capitals of northern Spain, which are all nearby.

From the Parador you can visit the traditional cheese dairies in the area, the Rioja Alavesa wineries, the Salto del Nervión waterfall, or the Salado de Añana Valley, with its saltwater springs that emerged more than 200 million years ago.

Its strategic location gives travellers easy access to several capital cities in the north of Spain. Bilbao, San Sebastian, Burgos and Logroño are less than 100 kilometres away. The nearest capital, barely 12 kilometres away, is the modern yet historical city of Vitoria. This capital city offers visitors an Old Quarter with dozens of monuments and pedestrian streets to lose themselves in. It also boasts the title of Green Capital and has a green ring that runs around the city.

The beauty of the landscape and the uniqueness of the building make the Parador de Argómaniz the perfect setting for weddings or events of all kinds. Legend has it that this was the very spot that made Napoleon decide to use the palace as a resting place before taking the city of Vitoria.
