The Gateway to the Picos de Europa
Parador de Cangas de Onís

The Parador de Cangas de Onís awaits you on the banks of the river Sella, surrounded by the spectacular Picos de Europa. It is located in the Benedictine monastery of San Pedro de Villanueva, one of the oldest in Asturias and closely linked to the lineage of the first kings of Asturias.

The Parador, with spectacular rooms of stone and wood decorated to give a warm traditional feel, is the ideal starting point to discover the marvels to be found in the Asturian landscape. The salons and garden next to the river make an ideal setting for unforgettable celebrations, while its location just two kilometres away from Cangas de Onís allows you to enjoy the folklore of this ancient culture.

The monastery of San Pedro de Villanueva was originally built in the mid 8th c., by order of Alfonso I, the third king of Asturias, in memory of his predecessor, Favila, son of Don Pelayo, and soon became home to the first royal pantheons of the kings of Asturias.

The building has been a National Monument since 1907 due to its cultural importance and imposing architecture. The monastery conserves the traces of over 1200 years of history to form a site of incalculable value in combination with the nearby 8th c. Romanesque church.

Explore the surroundings in Cangas de Onís

Asturias is synonymous with natural beauty. Situated in the valley of the rivers Sella and Güeña, Cangas de Onís offers an unmatched location at the feet of the National Park of the Picos de Europa, the largest limestone mountain range on the European coast. It is recognised as a Biosphere Reserve and forms part of Natura 2000. Its location just 15 kilometres from the sea means that there are variations in height of up to 2,500 metres, deep canyons and gorges, along with a large number of caves and grottos. The park itself is also home to a wide variety of forests, lakes such as Ercina and Enol and animals such as chamois, capercaillies and wolves. Many shepherds and livestock farmers can still be found working in the Picos de Europa, where they produce some of the most delicious cheeses in Spain.

The surroundings of Cangas de Onís also have a very rich cultural heritage where you can directly experience the history of Asturias: from outstanding prehistoric monuments to the testimonies of the construction of the Kingdom of Asturias, along with important examples of Romanesque architecture.

If you love hiking, we have a few trails to recommend: Ruta del Cares, Mirador de Ordiales, Camino Real, the northern route of the St James’ Way or the Primitive Way from Oviedo. The wildest and most natural beaches on the Cantabrian coast can also be reached from Cangas:  Rodiles (Villaviciosa), one of the best surfing spots in Spain; Vega (Ribadesella), Santa Marina (an urban beach bordered by impressive colonial-style indiano palaces), Guadamia (highly recommended for children), San Antolín, and Gulpiyuri (unique in Europe).

There are several noteworthy examples of Romanesque and Gothic architecture in the area. One of these is the abbey of San Pedro de Villanueva in the Parador de Cangas de Onís, which conducts guided tours. It’s the oldest building in the city, and its Romanesque façade still retains some splendid capitals. Given its proximity, we highly recommend a visit to the charming coastal towns of Ribadesella and Llanes.

    Picos de Europa

Picos de Europa was declared a National Park on 22 July 1918 by Alfonso XIII, with the name "Parque Nacional de la Montaña de Covadonga", and it was the first nature reserve in the country.

The Picos de Europa have the largest limestone formation in Atlantic Europe, with important karst processes, chasms that measure more than 1,000 m, highly notable glacial erosion and the presence of lakes. Its cliffs are inhabited by chamois deer, its dense forests by roe deer, wolves and the occasional bear. The Park is home to more than 100 species of birds, including the black woodpecker and the capercaillie, and among large birds of prey, the griffon vulture and the golden eagle.

The National Park is much more than its landscape; centuries of history are writ large in its villages, valleys, churches, mountain passes and roads. On 9 July 2003, the Unesco approved the proposal to designate it a Biosphere Reserve.
