At the heart of Middle Age
Parador de Cardona

The Parador de Cardona stands on a promontory in a 9th c. castle. It is one of the most impressive medieval complexes in Catalonia. Its privileged location offers visitors an exceptional view of Cardona, the Pyrenees and the interior of Catalonia.

Inside, moats, towers and Gothic walls are combined with a décor designed for comfort and furnishings inspired by Catalan medieval art. The restaurant, located in the old refectory, is one of the most impressive in the Paradores portfolio. You’ll be amazed by the gallery of pointed arches as you savour the best in gastronomy.

Legend has it that the castle of Cardona was never taken throughout its eleven centuries of history. The castle’s origins go back to Charlemagne, who reconquered the region from the Moors. As part of the lands of the Cardonas, one of the most influential Catalan families of the period, it soon became a military bulwark in many conflicts such as the Reapers’ War, the War of the Spanish Succession and the Peninsular War.

A notable feature of the castle is the cylindrical Maiden’s Tower, some 10 metres high. There are stories that one of the Lords of Cardona imprisoned his daughter there to stop her from meeting her lover, a young Moslem.

    Explore the surroundings in Cardona

The historical quarter of Cardona, declared a Cultural Site of National Interest, will take you back to another age. The best way to discover it is to lose yourself in the district, wander through its streets and plazas, see its medieval architecture and discover its history, the strategic role it played on the frontier with Al Ándalus and the commercial importance of its Salt Mountain, a truly unique natural phenomenon. If you visit us in May or June, you’ll also have the chance to discover one of the most interesting traditions in the region : the Salt Fiesta of Cardona and its medieval fair, and the Patum de Berga, with its dances of giants and bonfires at night.

Thanks to its privileged location, Cardona offers a wide range of experiences. Nearby you can find impressive Romanesque monuments, such as the Fountain of El Cardener, the Monastery of Montserrat, and the colourful giants' workshop of Toni Mujal. And if you like nature, the Parador is the starting point for beautiful routes on foot or by bike, or you can set off and visit incredible landscapes such as the Nature Park of Montserrat. What’s more, the Parador is only 98 km away from Barcelona, where you can visit iconic places such as the Barrio Gótico and the Sagrada Familia.

Two great attractions of the region are its nature and its villages. From the Parador you have your choice of hiking or bicycle trails, such as the Molinos de la Sal (Salt Mills) route, which runs along the sites of the stones from three old mills along the banks of the Cardener river. Other natural itineraries to enjoy are the Via Salaria, the Monks' Route, and the Border Route which takes you on the paths that surrounded the territories of the old Andalusian border.

The area around Carmona is home to Romanesque monuments, museums and monasteries such as the Cardener Fountain or Montserrat (45 km.) with the Monastery and the Museum. And Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia and the cradle of its culture, is just an hour and a half away by car. It’s famous for its Gothic Quarter and the Eixample neighbourhood, the site of some of Barcelona's most distinctive Catalan modernist buildings. These are home to world-famous works by the architect Antonio Gaudí, which include but are in no way limited to, the Casa Milà, the Casa Batlló and the Sagrada Familia, among others.
