The Medieval castle that houses the Parador de Sigüenza dominates the entire city. Kings, cardinals and bishops resided in this 12th century fortress that was built over an Arab citadel. Both the interior and exterior of the castle are impressive. The cobbled courtyard, the rooms with wooden balconies, the 13th century Romanesque chapel and the vaulted dining room will take you on a journey back in time.
Sigüenza is synonymous with history.
Besides the Parador, the cathedral is the most iconic place in the city. The Casa del Doncel, the churches of San Vicente and Santiago, the city’s entrance gates and the Plaza Mayor are also must-sees.
Sigüenza is 80 kilometres from Guadalajara and 130 kilometres from Madrid. If you are travelling from the capital, you can take the opportunity to take the Medieval train and transport yourself to the era of troubadours, knights and princesses, before enjoying a guided tour of the city.

The castle is the most iconic building in Sigüenza besides the cathedral, which is known for the famous Doncel sculpture. It has two towers on the main façade, which lends it a fortified appearance, and Gothic rose windows. In the town we can also visit the Romanesque church of San Vicente, the Episcopal Palace, the Renaissance church of Nuestra Señora de los Huertos and the convent of San Francisco.
Next to the cathedral is the Plaza Mayor, which has two porticoed sides and stately houses with arches and coats of arms.
You can also admire the remains of the wall and two of Sigüenza’s entrance gates: the Puerta del Sol and the Arco del Portal Mayor.
If you are interested in sacred art, you must visit the Diocesan Museum of Ancient Art.
If you want to explore the area around Sigüenza, a few kilometres away is the Barranco del Río Dulce Natural Park.
There are routes to explore the forests and the river canyon on foot or by bike.
In the province of Guadalajara, you can also visit the Tejera Negra beech forest, the Black Architecture villages and the Brihuega lavender fields.
